Understanding the need: the starting point

To prepare his 2026 Easter collection, a chocolatier wanted to create several thermoformed moulds matching his own creations. The aim was to produce chocolates with original shapes, while retaining control of their manufacture within his own workshop.

Need — Designing suitable tooling

The client had models representing his ideas, but they could not be used directly for thermoforming. The tooling to be produced had to meet several requirements:

  • match the intended appearance;
  • allow easy release from the mould;
  • provide a surface finish compatible with thermoforming;
  • withstand the heat and the suction forces generated when shaping the plastic sheets.

Our goal — Turning an idea into a production tool

Our mission was to turn the client's concepts into genuine manufacturing tooling. To do so, we looked for the best solution to reconcile:

  • fidelity to the desired design;
  • the technical constraints of thermoforming;
  • a controlled development cost.

The highlights of the project

Rethinking the design with the client

Rather than starting solely from the supplied files, we arranged a video-conference discussion. This working session made it possible to: understand precisely the chocolatier's expectations; rework the design live; adapt each shape to the constraints of thermoforming; validate the design choices immediately. This collaboration saved time while limiting back-and-forth exchanges.

Prototyping and validating the shapes

The tooling was manufactured in PETG using FDM 3D printing. A first set of parts was produced in order to check: the visual appearance; the quality of the thermoforming; the release of the future impressions; the behaviour of the parts during suction. Once the trials were validated, we launched the manufacture of the final models.

Producing the Easter tooling

In total, six different shapes were produced for the 2026 Easter collection. These parts directly constitute the tooling used by the chocolatier to make his thermoformed moulds. He then carries out the thermoforming himself in his workshop, in order to produce his chocolate moulds with complete autonomy.

3D printing in the service of production

3D printing is not only for making final parts. It is also an excellent way to quickly produce bespoke tooling. By combining bespoke design, rapid prototyping and validation before production, it is possible to develop solutions suited to the specific needs of each trade, while reducing costs and lead times compared with traditional manufacturing methods.
