200 TPU grille guards for Renault Trucks

200 flexible guards in fluorescent-yellow TPU 95A (gyroid infill) to make maintenance work safer: soft enough to prevent injury, firm enough to hold well. Optimised file, iterative testing and hardened-steel extrusion gears to sustain the run.

Client's need

1

The request - Printing a flexible guard for a truck grille

Renault Trucks entrusted us with the production of 200 grille guards intended to make maintenance operations on their vehicles safer. Although the 3D file was supplied by their teams, we proposed technical modifications to ease printing and improve the finish. The part had to be flexible to limit injuries, while ensuring a good hold on the grilles.

2

The need - Making maintenance operations safer with a visible, flexible part

This part helped prevent injuries during maintenance work, when the grilles are raised. 3D printing stood out as a relevant solution to:

  • Produce a small run with no mould cost
  • Manufacture a complex part in a single print

Our objective – Ensuring the reliability of a demanding TPU print

The main challenge was managing printing in TPU, a demanding material. We:

  • Ran several tests on the first parts
  • Supported Renault Trucks in adjusting the file
  • Updated our machine parameters with photographic monitoring

Our response

1

Technical advice and settings adapted to TPU

The adjustments were carried out by Renault Trucks following our recommendations. Settings adopted:

  • Fluorescent-yellow TPU 95A
  • 10 % infill, gyroid pattern

FDM optimisation and manual inspection to guarantee quality

Technology: FDM, chosen for its controlled cost and the sufficient quality required. Incidents:

  • Rapid wear of the gears, loss of parts
  • Complete replacement of the gears with hardened-steel models

A project appreciated for its rigour and support

Delivery in two stages: sending the finished parts while awaiting receipt of the new equipment. Client feedback:

  • Very satisfied with the quality, the monitoring and the communication
  • New projects were started straight afterwards

Conclusion

Flexibility at the service of maintenance

200 TPU guards, soft enough to prevent injury, firm enough to hold well. A typical use case where 3D printing makes a workshop's daily routine safer, in a small run.

The dimensional accuracy, the quality of the material and the value for money were all optimal.
