The role of a slicer like Cura

A slicer converts 3D files (.STL, .OBJ) into G-code, the language of printers: extruder path, number of layers, speed, supports. Cura, developed by Ultimaker, is free and open source — its code is freely accessible and modifiable. It is the "conductor" of printing: a poorly prepared file produces an unusable part, even with a good 3D model.

The basic settings to check

  • Select a compatible printer profile
  • Import at the right scale (Cura works in millimetres)
  • Rest the bearing face on the bed, avoid large overhangs

The essential parameters

Layer height: for a 0.4 mm nozzle, between 0.1 and 0.28 mm — finer looks better but takes longer. Infill: 15–25% for appearance, 50% and above for structural parts. Temperature & speed: respect the filament's range; 40 to 60 mm/s offer a good quality/time compromise.

Supports and bed adhesion

  • Enable supports only if necessary
  • Test alternative orientations to avoid them
  • Brim or raft depending on the part
  • Keep the bed clean

Tips and mistakes to avoid

  • Do not neglect the first layer (slow speed, right temperature)
  • Keep an eye on the estimated time and filament weight
  • Create and reuse profiles by material
